In the Great Hall they will first undergo the Sorting Ceremony using the Sorting Hat, an old wizard's hat.

While they wait, about 20 ghosts pass by; among them the "Fat Friar", an old Hufflepuff student, talking about "Peeves", the poltergeist.

The students notice the strange ceiling of the Great Hall, dotted with stars. Hermione tells those around her that the ceiling was bewitched to look like the sky outside. She read it in Hogwarts, a History.

Harry, Ron and Hermione are all sorted into Gryffindor, along with Lavender Brown, Seamus Finnigan, Neville Longbottom and Dean Thomas. Sorted into Hufflepuff are Hanna Abbott, Susan Bones and Justin Finch-Fletchley. Sorted into Ravenclaw are Terry Boot, Mandy Brocklehurst and Lisa Turpin. Slytherin House's new students will be Millicent Bullstrode, Draco Malfoy, Crabbe, Goyle and Blaise Zabini.

During dinner they meet Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as Nearly Headless Nick, resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower, who tells them about the Bloody Baron, the Slytherin House ghost. Hermione is talking to Percy about Transfiguration.

Seated at the head table are Hagrid, Professor McGonagall, Professor Dumbledore, Professor Quirrell, and a teacher with a hooked nose, named Professor Snape, who teaches Potions and who knows a lot about the Dark Arts.

Dumbledore tells the students that he was asked by Mr. Filch, the caretaker, to remind them that no magic may be used between classes in the corridor.

After dinner, going to Gryffindor Tower, they are harassed by Peeves the poltergeist. His cat, Mrs. Norris, also patrols the corridors.

He has Herbology classes with Professor Sprout outside at the greenhouses behind the castle and History of Magic classes with Professor Binns, a ghost. Professor Binns drones on while they scribble down names and dates, and they get Emeric the Evil and Uric the Oddball mixed up. Harry's Charms teacher is a tiny little wizard called Professor Flitwick. Defense Against the Dark Arts is taught by Professor Quirell.

Hedwig brings Harry a letter from Hagrid.

Snape, who teaches potions in the dungeons, appears to hate Harry. He starts asking difficult questions like "What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" and "Where would you look if I told you to find me a bezoar?" and "What is the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane?" He admonishes Harry for not knowing the answers. He ignores Hermione, who had been raising her hand. The answer to the first question is a sleeping potion, called the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from a goat which will save you from most poisons, and monkshood and wolfsbane are the same plant, and also are called aconite.

Neville spills his potion on himself, causing him pain. He had added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the fire.

After classes they go to Hagrid's cabin on the edge of the forbidden forest where they also meet Hagrid's boarhound Fang.

While Draco Malfoy makes fun of him, Parvati Patil quarrels with Pansy Parkinson of Slytherin.

Draco flies away with the remembrall which Neville lost during his fall and Harry chases him. He catches it just before it falls on the ground after Draco had thrown it into the air. Instead of punishing him for flying while he was not allowed to, Professor McGonagall takes Harry to Oliver Wood, captain of the Quidditch team. Harry is told he will be the new Seeker, and he will recieve a broom; either a "Nimbus Two Thousand" or a "Cleansweep Seven"

Harry finds out when talking to Fred and George that they are Beaters on the Quidditch team. Then they tell Harry they have to go because Lee Jordan believes he has found a new secret passageway out of the school; probably behind the statue of Gregory the Smarmy.

Draco challenges Harry to a wizard's duel in the Trophy Room at midnight. At midnight, when Harry and Ron leave, they meet with Hermione and Neville and they all go together. Hermione tries to talk them out of it, saying that if either of them gets caught, she won't rest until she's learned the Curse of the Bogies Quirrell told them about, to use on them. Draco does not show up for the duel. He had tricked them into coming hoping they would get caught. They almost get caught by Filch and Mrs. Norris. Trying to get back to Griffindor tower, Peeves tries to get them caught as well. When they reach the end of a corridor at a locked door, Hermione opens it with the spell ¤ Alohomora and they enter.

They find a three-headed dog guarding the room and escape again, returning finally to Griffindor tower.

Draco, seizing the package, is startled to find out from Professor Flitwick that Harry is allowed a broom, while no first year is allowed to have one at school. He himself has a 'simple' Comet Two Sixty at home.

At night Harry has his first Quidditch training. Oliver wood teaches Harry the rules: There are seven players on each team. Three of them are Chasers. The chasers have to throw the Quaffle, a large ball, through one of the hoops to score a goal, getting ten points for every goal. There's one Keeper on each team, whose job it is to stop the chasers from scoring. There are two balls called Bludgers which can knock players off their brooms. There are two Beaters on each team, trying to knock the Bludgers toward the other team members. And finally there's the Golden Snitch. The Seeker who catches it ends the game, getting an extra hundred and fifty points.

In Charms classes, Professor Flitwick is teaching them how to make objects fly, starting with a feather, with the spell ¤ Wingardium Leviosa. After the class, Ron is overheard complaining about Hermione who runs away in tears. They hear that she is crying in the girls' bathroom.

During dinner, Professor Quirrell sprints into the hall saying there's a Troll in the dungeons. Harry and Ron sneak away to go and search for Hermione, seeing Snape walking through the corridors. They find out that the Troll is in a room and lock it in. Then they hear a scream and realise it's Hermione in the girls' bathroom, which is the room they just locked. They open and enter the bathroom. Harry jumps on the troll's back and shoves his wand up the troll's nose. Then Ron manages to get the troll's club away from him using the spell Wingardium Leviosa.

Harry, Ron and Hermione study for their final exams. While looking up Dittany in One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi they meet Hagrid in the library, hiding something behind his back. Trying to figure out what he's hiding, Ron looks in the section where Hagrid was looking, and comes back with books like Dragon Species of Great Britain and Ireland, From Egg to Inferno and A Dragon Keeper's Guide. They suspect that Hagrid wants to have a Dragon. It is against the law to keep a Dragon, as dragon breeding was outlawed by the Warlock's Convention of 1709. Ron says there's still Dragons in Britain, two known species being the Common Welsh Green and the Hebridean Black.

Later they go to Hagrid's hut. Hagrid tells them that many teachers helped to guard the sorcerer's stone; Professor Sprout, Professor Flitwick, Professor McGonagall, Professor Quirrell, Dumbledore and Professor Snape.

Hagrid shows them a dragon egg he won the night before from a stranger. He wants to breed it and has taken a book from of the library called Dragon Breeding for Pleasure and Profit. The dragon is a Norwegian Ridgeback.

When the egg hatches someone is peeking through the windows.... Malfoy has seen the dragon.

Hagrid names his dragon Norbert. Realising he can't keep it, they decide to send it to Charlie in Romania. They send Charlie a letter by owl and he writes them back telling them he would be glad to take the dragon and that he will ask some friends to pick it up at midnight on saturday from the tallest tower of Hogwarts.

Ron had been bitten on his hand when he helped Hagrid feed Norbert and the wound had gotten infected. He had to go to the hospital wing to have it looked after. Ron left Charlie's letter in a book Malfoy took. They knew that Malfoy would find the letter and learn that they are planning to send Norbert away on saturday.

Saturday night they take Norbert in a cage under Harry's Invisibility Cloak up the tower. Professor McGonagall finds Malfoy lurking around and sends him back with detention.

The moment Charlie's friends fly off with Norbert they are caugh by Filch.

Apparently Neville heard Malfoy's story and told Professor McGonagall. She is furious, leading Neville with her. She takes fifty points per student from Gryffindor House and gives them detention. Everybody in school is angry at them (exept the Slytherin students) because they all wanted one of the three other houses to win the House Cup, and Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville has lost Gryffindor a great deal of points at one time.

About a week before exams, Harry overhears Quirrell and Snape talking, and they suspect that Snape now knows how to get by all the obstacles that are protecting the Sorcerer's Stone.

The next morning they are told that their detention will be at eleven o'clock at night. Harry, Neville, Hermione and also Malfoy who got detention earlier have to go with Hagrid and Fang into the forbidden forest. They start following a trail of silver Unicorn blood. A unicorn has been hurt badly, the second time in one week since Hagrid found one dead last wednesday.

Draco and Neville go with Fang, while Harry and Hermione go with Hagrid. Harry wonders if a werewolf could be killing unicorns but Hagrid says they're not fast enough.

They encounter Ronan and Bane, centaurs. They do not respond to Hagrid's inquiry of the wounded unicorn

They see red sparks in the sky, meaning the others are in trouble, and Hagrid speeds over there while Harry and Hermione wait on the spot. It only was Malfoy frightening Neville who shot the sparks. Now Harry has to go with Draco and Fang, while Hermione and Neville go with Hagrid.

They find the dead unicorn. Suddenly, out of the shadows, a hooded figure comes crawling across the ground, and starts to drink the unicorn's blood. Malfoy screams, the creature comes quickly toward Harry who is transfixed to the spot. Harry feels a screaming pain in his forehead, as if his Scar was on fire. After a while he comes to and finds a centaur standing over him. His name is Firenze.

While he takes Harry back to Hagrid he explains that drinking unicorn blood is a monstrous thing to do. That from the moment the blood touches the lips of the one who slayed the beast, he will lead a cursed life. He goes on to tell Harry that only someone who is desparate and needs the blood to stay alive long enough to drink something else to keep him alive would do that. Harry understands that it must have been Voldemort, needing enough time to live to get the Elixer of Life.

They go back to the castle.

The final exams of the first year begin. They have been given special new quills for the exam, bewitched with an Anti-Cheating spell. Professor Flitwick has them make a pineapple tapdance across the desk, and Professor McGonagall has them turn a mouse into a snuffbox and Professor Snape has them make a Forgetfulness potion.

Their last exam is History of Magic. Hermione complains she needn't have learned about the 1637 Werewolf Code of Conduct or the uprising of Elfric the Eager.

Harry is worried about his hurting scar and restless, feeling he forgot something. Suddenly he remembers. he wants to ask Hagrid about the dragon-egg. They hurry over to Hagrid's hut and start questioning him about how, where and from who he got the egg. In the middle of the story Hagrid mentions that he told the stranger, from who he won the egg in a bar, that it's easy to calm Fluffy down by playing music.

Hurrying to tell everything to Dumbledore they run into Professor McGonagall who tell's them Dumbledore was called to the Ministry of Magic and left.

Harry decides that he has to get to the Stone first. He will go that night. Ron and Hermione tell him they will go with him. They wait until everybody has left the common room. Harry gets the Invisibility Cloak and his flute from his room. When he gets back to the common room, Neville tries to prevent them from going and breaking the school rules which would cost Gryffindor more house points. Hermione freezes him with a full Body-Bind spell ¤ Petrificus Totalus.

They go to the forbidden room. The door is already open, meaning that Snape already got past Fluffy. They manage to get past Fluffy, the three-headed dog, playing music on the flute, and enter through the trap door. After a long fall they land on a bed of Devil's Snare, a plant. It is trying to entrap them. Hermione sends a jet of bluebell flames on the plant to make it let go.

Next they come to a room with a locked door. Hermione tries an Alohomora charm but it does not work. They see what appears to be birds flying abound them and then realize that what they see are winged keys. Harry manages to catch the correct one and open the door.

After the key-room, they need to get through a room with life-sized chess pieces. Here they must play real-time Wizard Chess. Ron has to sacrifice himself as a player in the game to get Harry and Hermione to the other side.

Fluffy was Hagrids obstacle, the Devil's Snare was Professor Sprouts, The keys were Professor Flitwicks, the chess Professor McGonagalls, leaving Quirrell's and Snape's obstacles still to be tackled.

Quirrell's turns out to have been a Troll blocking the way, but it already had been knocked out. Snape's obstacle to guard the Stone is a set of potions, coming with a riddle to define the working of them. Hermione unravels the logic, giving the potion that allows you to continue to Harry, and taking the potion that allows her to go back. Harry takes the potion and steps through the fire-portal to enter the next room.

Quirrell, not Snape, turns out to be in the room. He has been the one going after the Sorcerer's Stone the whole time. By magic, out of nowhere ropes spring out of thin air and wrapping Harry tightly. Behind Quirrell is the Mirror of Erised.

Quirrell's new master is Lord Voldemort. He tries to use Harry to find out where the Sorcerer's Stone is. He is muttering to himself.

When Harry looks in the mirror, he sees himself putting his hand into his pocket and pulling out a blood-red stone. His reflection winks and puts the stone back in it's pocket, and as it does, Harry feels it. Somehow he'd gotton the Stone in his own pocket.

Harry lies about what he sees in the mirror to Quirrell. Then Voldemort reveals himself. He is hidden under Quirrells turban; now part of Quirrell himself. Voldemort tells Harry he wants the stone to get the Elixer of Life. He also tells him that he killed his parents. Harry and Quirrell/Voldemort get into a fight and a needle-sharp pain sears across his scar.

Quirrell lets go of him, hunched in pain, blisters on his fingers. Voldemort commands Quirrell to seize Harry. Quirrell, telling Voldemort he can not hold Harry, is told to kill him. As Quirrell raises his hand to perform a deadly curse, Harry instinctively reaches up and grabs Quirrell's face. Pain building in his head, everything falls into blackness....

Harry regains consiousness, looking into the face of Dumbledore. Harry is in the Hospital Wing, tended by Madam Pomfrey where he has been the last three days. She lets Dumbledore talk briefly to Harry. Dumbledore tells Harry that while in London it became clear to him that he should be at Hogwarts. He returned immediately, getting back just in time to pull Quirrell off of Harry. The Stone has been destroyed, Quirrell is dead, Voldemort's presence unknown.

Dumbledore also tells Harry that his mother died to save him; that it was he who gave him the Invisibility Cloak at the request of his late father and that his father once saved Snape's life; Snape, seemingly wanting to hurt Harry, in reality working so hard to protect Harry's life to make the score even with Harry's father.

Ron and Hermione visit him. Also Hagrid visits him, in tears, feeling guilty for having told a stranger about how to get past Fluffy, resulting in the risk of Harry's life. Harry gets a photo album of his parents from Hagrid.

During the end of year feast, it is announced that Slytherin has the most house points and it appears that they will win the house cup. But Dumbledore awards Ron, Hermione, Harry, and Neville an extra 170 points total, thereby making Gryffindor the winner of the house cup.

All of them passed their exams. The next day they board the Hogwarts Express and head back home, where Harry will spend another summer with the Dursleys.

Then he lets it fall to the floor.

Immediately after, Uncle Vernon storms into the kitchen, raging with anger, showing him a letter which just arrived. The letter states that the Improper Use of Magic Office has found out that at 9:12 PM, in Harry's house, a Hover Charm was used, and underage wizards are not permitted to perform spells outside of school, and that further spellwork may lead to expulsion from Hogwarts. His aunt and uncle were not aware of this fact.

Uncle Vernon literally locks Harry up into the house, even putting bars on Harry's window.

Ron wakes Harry up. He heard about Harry being locked up from his father who works for the Ministry of Magic.

He came together with Fred and George in their father's flying car. After taking all his stuff and Hedwig they break out the bars, almost being caught by Uncle Vernon, and fly back to Ron's house.

They speculate about who's House-elf Dobby is, highly suspecting Lucius Malfoy, father of Draco of Slytherin.

Ron now understands it was not the fault of Errol, the Weasley's owl, nor Hermes, Percy's owl (a present for becoming Prefect), that Harry did not receive their letters.

Harry is told that Mr. Weasley works for at the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office at the Ministry of Magic together with a warlock called Perkins.

They arrive at their house, the Burrow, near a village called Ottery St. Catchpole, where an angry and worried Mrs. Weasley is waiting for them. After a storm of angry words they enter the house.

Harry sees a clock on the wall that does not have numbers. Instead, its hands point to: "time to make tea", "time to feed the chickens" and "you're late". He also sees books on the mantelpiece with titles like Charm Your Own Cheese, Enchantment in Baking and One Minute Feast - It's Magic! and hears Witching Hour on the radio with the popular singing sorceress Celestina Warbeck

During breakfast, Ginny enters in her nightdress, giving a small squeal and running out again. After finishing breakfast, Fred, George and Ron have to de-gnome the garden. Harry offers to help since he never saw a de-gnoming before. Mrs Weasley takes a book of Gilderoy Lockhart's from the mantelpiece. On it, written in gold letters, is the title Gilderoy Lockhart's Guide to Household Pests.

Mr. Weasley comes home after a rough night of work. He complains there were nine raids and old Mundungus Fletcher tried to put a hex on him when he had his back turned. All they came up with were a few shrinking door keys and a biting kettle. There was some pretty nasty stuff but that wasn't his department. Mortlake was taken away for questioning about some odd ferrets, but that's the Committee on Experimental Charms.

Mrs. Weasley quarrells with Mr. Weasley about him having enchanted the car to fly.

Harry is being shown Ron's room. It's covered with posters of his favorite quidditch team, the Chudley Cannons. In a corner, there is a pile of comics titled The Adventures of Martin Miggs, the Mad Muggle. Although Ron apologises that the room is a bit small and right underneath the ghoul in the attic, Harry says it's the best house he's ever been in.

While staying with the Weasleys, Harry, Ron and the others receive a letter from Hogwarts with a list of the books they will require for their second year. Fred is curious as to why Percy is behaving strangely. He got twelve O.W.L.s and hardly gloated at all; Ordinary Wizarding Levels, George explains. Bill, the oldest of the brothers, who was Head Boy at Hogwarts, got twelve too. He's now working in Egypt for Gringotts. Charlie, the second oldest brother, is studying dragons in Romania.

The next morning they will go to Diagon Alley to purchase their books. Mrs. Weasley offers Harry a flowerpot. Ron tells her that Harry has never travelled by Floo Powder before. After explaining that you have to throw a bit of floo powder into the fireplace and clearly state the name of the place where you want to go while stepping into the fire, Harry steps into the fire. Harry swallows a lot of hot ash while doing so, making him stutter the name of Diagon Alley and he ends up somewhere else.

Harry finds himself in a wizard's shop. When Harry prepares to leave, Draco and his father Lucius Malfoy enter and he quickly hides in a cabinet. They are attended by the owner Mr. Borgin. It seems Mr. Malfoy wants to sell some of his possesions; afraid of having a Ministry inspection. He talks about a rumor concerning a new Muggle Protection Act.

Draco asks if he can have some object in the store; a Hand of Glory, which gives only light to the holder after inserting a candle, but his father tells him no. Finally Draco and Lucius leave and Harry also leaves the store, seeing that the store's name is Borgin and Burkes.

He starts walking, and sees a sign that says Knockturn Alley. He runs into Hagrid who takes him back to Diagon Alley. Hagrid happened to be there to buy Flesh-Eating Slug Repellent.

Hermione, who was waiting at Gringotts, meets with Harry. The Weasley's are just arriving, happy to see Harry back. Mr. Weasley is told by Harry about seeing Mr. Malfoy at Borgins and Burkes. He asks if he bought anything, eager to catch him for something. Hermione introduces her parents. After everybody has gotten their money, they will go off on their own, agreeing to meet in an hour at Flourish and Blotts to buy the necessary schooll supplies.

After buying some ice cream, looking in the windows of Quality Quidditch Supplies, and buying ink and parchment, they meet with Fred, George and Lee Jordan in Gambol and Japes Wizarding Joke Shop. They are looking at Dr. Filibuster's Fabulous Wet-Start, No-Heat Fireworks. In a tiny junk shop they find Percy, looking into a book called Prefects Who Gained Power.

An hour later they meet at the bookstore, Flourish and Blotts. Hanging above them is a large banner announcing Gilderoy Lockhart is there signing copies of his autobiography Magical Me. A reporter is taking photographs for the Daily Prophet. Lockhart sees Harry and makes him pose for pictures with him. He announces he will be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts this year.

Draco and his father enter the bookstore. Getting a very old battered book out of Ginny's Cauldron he makes unfriendly remarks to Mr. Weasley about them being poor and they end up fighting. Hagrid finally stops them. Mr. Weasley has suffered a cut lip and Mr. Malfoy was hit in the eye with a copy of The Encyclopedia of Toadstools.

Everybody goes back to the Leaky Cauldron from where Harry and the Weasley's will go home by floo powder after saying good-bye to the Grangers.

The car has been magically enhanced to be bigger from the inside then it looks on the outside.

After having to go back for George's Filibuster fireworks, Fred's broom and Ginny's diary, they finally start on their way. Running late, Mr. Weasley suggest to use the Invisibility Booster which he installed, but Mrs. Weasley refuses to let him.

After Percy, Mr. Weasley, Fred, George, Mrs. Weasley and Ginny enter, it is only Harry and Ron who need to pass through the wall to get to Platform nine and three-quarters. Instead of passing through, they crash into the wall. With the gateway sealed, Ron suggests to take Mr. Weasley's car. Since his parents know how to Apparate, vanish and reappear at home, they don't need the car.

They start the car, make it invisible and start following the Hogwart Express. They have problems getting the Invisibility Booster to start properly so they decide to fly over the clowds.

After a few hours, the engine starts to whine. As they finally see Hogwarts the car starts losing speed and in the end the engine dies completely. They crash into a big tree. Ron's wand has snappd. The tree starts hitting them back, and they escape by driving the car in reverse a small distance.

Looking through the windows, they see that the Sorting has already started.

They get caught by Professor Snape who takes them to his office. Apparently they were seen by Muggles flying a car, and the story was printed in the newspaper, the Evening Prophet in an article with interviews with Mrs. Hetty Bayliss from Norfolk, Mr. Angus Fleet of Peeples and five more people saying that they saw the flying car. Snape also tells them he saw that considerable damage has been done to the tree, the Whomping Willow.

They get a big lecture from Professor McGonagall and from Dumbledore but they don't get expelled. Professor Snape had jeered to them about the fact that Ron's father, who works at the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, will not like to hear that his own son got caught with a flying car. He's very disappointed to hear that they did not get expelled, even though they violated the Decree for the Restriction of Underage Wizardry.

After eating some sandwiches and drinking two silver goblets full of iced pumpkins juice which Professor McGonagall had provided for them, they go back to Gryffindor Tower where they meet with Hermione. Opening the red envelope, his mother's voice shouts like thunder through the hall, giving Ron a blastout for stealing the car to get to Hoqwarts. When it's finished it bursts into flames and curls into ashes.

Their first class that day is Herbology with Professor Sprout in the greenhouse outside the castle. While they wait for Professor Sprout, they see her coming, accompanied by Lockhart. Before entering, Lockhart talks to Harry about the car-incident and how 'Harry has become publicity-hungry', explaining that 'Harry is also a bit known of course, all that stuff about He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named' but that's not as good as winning Witch Weekly's Most-Charming-Smile Award five times in a row and 'Harry has a start but he has to take it slower; that he will have more time for that when he is older'.

In herbology, they will be repotting Mandrakes. Asking anybody if they know their properties, Hermione knows the answer; they are a powerful restorative. Mandrake forms an essential part of most antidotes, but are also dangerous since their cry is fatal to anyone who hears it. They start repotting them, taking the pots and compost, carefully avoiding the Venemous Tentacula because it's teething. Harry, Ron and Hermione are joined by Justin Finch-Fletchley from Hufflepuff. Justin tells them that he was down for Eton, but after showing his mother Lockart's books, she began to see it might be usefull to have a wizard in the family.

The next class is Transfiguration. Harry's skills have gotten a bit rusty during the summer. Ron has worse problems. He had patched his wand with some Spellotape but it seemes to be damaged beyond repair.

Sitting outside, Harry is approached by Colin Creevey, a first year from Gryffindor, who has a camera with him and wants to take a picture of Harry to prove that he met him. He'd like a picture together with Harry and he wants Harry to sign it. Malfoy, overhearing the conversation, starts making fun of them and they almost start a fight, stopped by Professor Lockhart who poses for a photo of himself with Harry. Harry, totally embarressed, wishes he knew a good Vanishing Spell.

They enter Lockharts first Defense Against the Dark Arts class. He introduces himself by his title "Gilderoy Lockhart, Order of Merlin, Third Class, Honorary Member of the Dark Force Defense League, and five-time winner of Witch Weekly's Most-Charming-Smile Award" adding "but I don't talk about that. I didn't get rid of the Bandon Banshee by smiling at her". They get a test with personal questions about Lockhart which includes questions like what is his "favorite color, secret ambition and ideal gift". All these answers are in his books, except that besides the other idea gifts mentioned, his ideal gift would be harmony and peace between magic an non-magic people. The he adds that he wouldn't say no to a bottle of Ogden's Old Firewhisky. Lockhart introduces the class to a cage of Cornish Pixies. After letting them out of the cage, they start wrecking the classroom. Lockhart's spell ¤ Peskipiksi Pesternomi has no effect and Harry, Ron and Hermione have to put them back into the cage. He keeps asking Harry all kind of questions about Quidditch, walking after Harry untill Harry finally manages to shake him off when he reaches the changing rooms. All the players are present; Katie Bell, Fred and George Weasley, Oliver Wood, Alicia Spinnet and Angelina Johnson. Wood gives them a long lecture about his new training program. After what seemed like ages they finally go onto the field.

Marcus Flint and his Slytherins team arrives. He has a personal note from Professor Snape, allowing them to train their new Seeker Draco Malfoy! His father, Lucius Malfoy 'bought' his son's place in the team by giving all of them a new Nimbus Two Thousand and One brooms. Malfoy starts making fun of Harry's Nimbus Two Thousand and George and Fred's Cleansweep Fives. Ron and Hermione come to see what is happening. They start arguing. Malfoy calls Hermione a Mudblood, one of the worst things to call a witch or wizard. They begin to fight, but Ron's wand backfires on himself when trying to Hex Malfoy. They take him to Hagrid.

Ron belches slugs. When they reach Hagrid's cabin, Professor Lockhart is just leaving. Hagrid thinks there's not much more they can do for Ron other than to wait for the the vomiting it to stop by itself. He tells them that Lockhart was giving him advice on how to get kelpies out of a well. Hagrid offers them some treacle fudge while they conversate about Lockhart, Malfoy and what Malfoy said. Next he shows them pumpkins he's growing for Halloween, a bit big to be 'normal'. Hermione supposes Hagrid used an Engorgement Charm, although he is not allowed to use magic anymore.

Going back to the castle, Harry and Ron are told they will do detention at eight o'clock in the evening. Ron will polish the silver in the trophy room with Mr. Filch and Harry will help Professor Lockhart answer his fan mail.

At eight he goes to his Lockhart's office and he begins addressing envelopes for fans like Gladys Gudgeon and Veronica Smethley. Harry suddenly hears a voice saying things like "come.., let me rip you.. let me tear you.. let me kill you".

He finally is able to go back to Gryffindor tower. In their letter they say that to be allowed to join, "one's head needs to be completely parted with their body", which Nearly Headless Nick's is not. "Otherwise it would be impossible for other members to participate in hunt activities as Horseback Head Juggling and Head Polo". The note is signed by Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore.

At the end of his conversation with Nearly Headless Nick, Filch burst in the corridor and takes him to his office for dripping mud from his shoes all over the castle. While Filch is thinking about an appropriate punishment for Harry, there's a loud bang and he speeds upstairs to catch Peeves, presumed guilty of this mischief.

Harry sees a purple envelope on Filch's desk. On it, he reads the words "Kwikspell, A Correspondence Course in Beginners' Magic". Intrigued, he opens it and reads the parchment. It is a beginner's course in magic with comments from those who have taken the course. Some of these read: Madam Z. Nettes of Topsham who used to be really poor in doing magic; now "her friends even beg her for the recipe of her Scintillation Solution" ...Warlock D. J. Prod from Didsbury improved his spells drastically with the course. Filch gets back to his office, and seeing the envelope in a different place, angrily sends Harry away, bewildered, without punishment.

Afterwards he finds out that Nearly Headless Nick persuaded Peeves to make the noise Filch heard to create a diversion for Harry. He asks Harry to come to his five hundredth Deathday Party on Halloween, together with Ron and Hermione.

Ron and Hermione hear about the invitation in the common room where Fred and George are trying to find out what would happen if you feed a Filibuster Firework to a salamander, which they "rescued" from a Care of Magical Creatures class.

On Halloween they go to the party. The room is filled with ghosts; among which them Fat Friar, the Hufflepuff ghost, the Bloody Baron, the Slytherin Ghost, Moaning Myrtle and Peeves. Peeves tells Moaning Myrtle some unkind things Hermione said about her and she bursts into one of her usual sobs and flees from the dungeon. The trio lie to Nearly Headless Nick that they are having a great time. Nick is proud of himself, telling them the Wailing Widow came all the way from Kent. A group of Head Polo playing ghosts on horses gallop into the room, Sir Patrick at the front.

They decide to leave and suddenly Harry hears the voice again he heard in Lockhart's office saying "... rip ... tear ... kill ..." and "... so hungry ... for so long ..." and ".. kill ... time to kill ...". They follow the voice and Harry hears it say "... I smell blood ... I SMELL BLOOD!". Then suddenly they see written on the wall "THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED, ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE." Underneath the sighn, hanging on a tornch bracket by her tail, is Mrs. Norris. Before they can get away from the place the corridor is crowded with students, trying to see what has happened.

Filch thinks Harry killed his cat. Dumbledore takes Harry, Ron, Hermione and Filch with him to Professor Lockhart's office. Professor McGonagall and Snape follow. Dubledore examines Mrs. Norris. Professor Lockhart is hovering all around them making suggestions, saying that it was probably the Transmogrifian Torture curse that killed it and that he remembered a similar case in Quagadogou. Dumbledore finally establishes that the cat is not dead but Petrified. Filch is convinced Harry did it since Harry found out he's a Squib. Although Harry doesn't tell them he heard "a voice", they believe his story that he was at the deathday party although he was in the corridor without any reason to be there. Dumbledore promises to have Professor Sprout cure his cat with some Mandrakes. Lockhart offers to do it, saying he could whip up a Mandrake Restorative Draught in his sleep. Harry, Ron and Hermione are told they may leave.

Ron explains to Harry that a Squib is someone born in a wizarding family who does not have any magical powers.

Filch guards the spot where his cat was cursed. He tries to remove the message on the wall with Mrs. Skower's All-Purpose Magical Mess Remover but with no effect.

One day Harry goes to the library to meet with Ron. Ron is already there doing homework. Professor Binns had asked for a three-feet-long composition on The Medieval Assembly of European Wizards. Harry tells Ron that when Justin Finch-Fletchley saw him, he ran away, frightened of of him. Hermione emerges from between the bookshelves and tells them that all the copies of Hogwarts, a History have been taken out. Everyone seems to want to read about the legend of the Chamber of Secrets.

They have History of Magic class with Professor Binns. While giving a lecture on the International Warlock Convention of 1289 Hermione asks about the legend of the Chamber of Secrets. Annoyingly he refuses with the reason that his subject is History of Magic, dealing with fact. He starts his lecture again continuing about a subcommittee of Sardinian sorcerers but Hermione asks him about the chamber again.

He starts to explain the story. Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. The four Houses are named after them: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. Slytherin wanted to ban muggles from entering the school and it came to an argument which made him leave the school. The story goes that he built a hidden chamber in the castle. Only his heir would be able to unseal the Chamber of Secrets to unleash the horror within and use it to purge the school of all who were unworthy to study magic. The horror is believed to be some sort of monster which the Heir of Slytherin alone can control.

Harry feels badly, remembering the Sorting Hat wanted to put him in Slytherin. He's afraid he might be Slytherin's heir.

Ron, Harry and Hermione come to the place where Mrs. Norris was attacked and see a lot of spiders all in a hurry to get outside through a crack. Remembering that there was water on the floor when it happened, they enter the girls' toilet nearby where Moaning Myrtle always stays. She's there and they talk to her. They are 'caught' and sent away by Percy.

Back in the common room they speculate about the identity of the Heir, Ron saying he believes it is Draco Malfoy. Hermione suggests using a Polyjuice Potion to transform themselves, temporarily, to look like three other people; three Slytherins. This way they can go into the Slytherin common room and ask Draco directly. Getting the recipe will be very difficult, since Snape said it was in a book called Moste Potente Potions, bound to be in the Restricted Section of the Library. They need to get a signed note of permission from a teacher to get the book.

Since the pixies incident, Pofessor Lockhart brought no live creatures to classes. He spent most of the class time reenacting his adventures. Harry was usually chosen to help him. So far Harry played a Transylvanian villager whom Lockhart had cured of a Babbling Curse, a yeti and a vampire. In the current lesson Harry has to play a Werewolf, Lockhart showing how he managed to perform a complex Homorphus Charm. Their homework assignment is to compose a poem about Lockhart's defeat of the Wagga Wagga Werewolf.

Before leaving, Hermione flatters him about what he said in Gadding with Ghouls, thereby managing to get the necessary signed permission to get the book from the Restricted Library Section. Lockhart tells Harry that he was asked to be Seeker for the National Squad once but preferred to go into eradication of the Dark Forces instead.

After getting Moste Potente Potions from the library, Harry Ron and Hermione go to Moaning Myrtle's out-of-order bathroom. According to Hermione, it's the most complicated potion she ever saw, requiring Lacewing flies, leeches, fluxweed, knotgrass and some more difficult to get ingredients like powdered horn of a bicorn and shredded skin of a boomslang. They'll have to steal it from Snape's private stores.

Harry has the Quidditch game against Slytherin. Oliver Wood gives his usual pep-talk. It's Draco Malfoy's first match as the Slytherin Seeker. Harry narrowly avoids a Bludger. George gives the Bludger a whack in the direction of Adrian Pucey but it changes direction in midair and heads straight for Harry again. This repeats itself. Fred also tries to beat the Bludger away with no effect. Slytherin leads sixty to zero and Fred and George call to Wood for a time out. They realise the Bludger has been tampered with and Harrry decides to handle the Bludger himself and let Fred and George play normally again. Harry plays on. He sees the Snitch above Malfoy's head, but is hit by a Bludger which breaks his arm. He speeds for the Snitch and catches it with his unharmed arm and lands. Lockhart tries to fix his arm but ends up removing his arm-bones and Harry has to go to the Hospital wing.

Madam Pomfrey is angry about what Lockart did but will manage to grow his bones back in a day with Skele-Gro. Ron and Hermione are with him and they suspect Draco tampered with the Bludger.

Waking up in the night from the pain, he finds Dobby on top of him. Dobby confesses it was him who tried to prevent Harry getting through to Platform nine and three-quarters and who tampered with the Bludger. He explains to Harry about House-elfs in general. Dobby inadvertantly lets slip during his warnings information about the Chamber of Secrets, confirming its existence to Harry. Suddenly Dobby hears footsteps and disappears in thin air.

Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall enter, bringing in a petrified, Colin Creevey and showing him to Madam Pomfrey. All the pictures in his camera are melted.

Harry is healed and is excused from the Hospital wing. Harry looks for Hermione and Ron and finds them in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. They already started on the Polyjuice Potion. Harry tells them what happened to Colin, which they already overheard Professor McGonagall telling Professor Flitwick. He also tells them about Dobby. Now they know the Chamber of Secrets has been opened before. They speculate about what kind of monster is in there. Hermione thinks it might be able to make itself invisible or maybe it can disquise itself.. She read about Chameleon Ghouls who can do that.

Everybody at Hogwarts is getting afraid and suspicious.

Christmas is near and the holiday will be the perfect time to use the Polyjuice potion to get a confession from Malfoy. They still need the Boomslang skin and the Bicorn horn and will try to get it in next Potions class from Professor Snape. On Thursday afternoon, the lesson goes as usual, Draco harrassing Ron by flickering puffer-fish eyes at Ron and Harry. They are making a Swelling Solution. To create a diversion so that Hermione can sneak into Snape's private stores, Harry throws one of Fred's Filibuster fireworks into Goyle's cauldron. It explodes, showering the whole class, Malfoy's nose and Goyle's hands swelling. Professor Snape calls for order and for everyone who has been affected to come to him for a Deflating Draft. Hermione manages to get the ingredients.

A week later, there's an announcement on the notice board that a Dueling Club will be started; first meeting that night. The trio decide to go, wondering who will be teaching. Hermione was told Professor Flitwick was a dueling champion when he was young. Entering, they find out it is Professor Lockhart and that Professor Snape will be his assistant. They start the Wizard's Duel demonstration. On the count of three, Professor Snape uses a Disarming Charm ¤ Expelliarmus to blast Lockhart off his feet. Next they will duel in pairs. Neville with Justin Finch-Fletchley, Ron with Seamus Finnigan, Harry with Draco and Hermione with Millicent Bullstrode. They are supposed to start on the count of three. Draco cheats and starts on 2, Harry is hit with a spell but manages to cast a counter Tickling Charm ¤ Rictusempra. Draco casts a spell again, ¤ Tarantallegra and Snape stops all duels by casting a ¤ Finite Incantatem. All stop, Lockhart helps up Ernie Macmillan and Miss Fawcett. Next Neville and Justin have to volunteer for a spell blocking demonstration, but Snape has Draco and Harry do it. Snape whispers a curse to Draco and when they start Malfoy casts a ¤ Serpensortia and a black snake comes out of his wand. Lockhart, trying to get rid of the snake, blows the snake ten feet into the air and it falls down again. Enraged, it slithers toward Justin. Harry, sprinting after it, comands it to 'leave him alone!' and miraculously it stops. Everybody is upset and Ron takes Harry away to the Gryffindor common room.

Ron explains to Harry that he is a Parselmouth, someone who can talk to snakes. Speaking the snake language, Parseltongue, is not considered a good quality in general, since Salazar Slytherin was famous for it. The whole school will think Harry is a decendant. Harry is afraid of this, since the Sorting Hat had wanted to put him in the Slytherin house.

The next day he wants to explain what really happened to Justin. He goes to seek him in the library. A group of Hufflepuffs are talking and Harry overhears their conversation. He hears Ernie Macmillan trying to convince the others that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. Harry shows himself and tries to convince them of what he really did at the Dueling Club, with no effect, and goes away.

Leaving, he bumps into Hagrid who tells Harry that his roosters are being killed. He continues and finds Justin and Nearly Headless Nick petrified solid. Peeves appears and starts to shout "ATTACK! ATTACK! ...." Professor McGonagall appears to the spot and takes Harry with her. Justin is taken to the hospital wing by Professor Flitwick and Professor Sinistra of the Astronomy Department. Harry is taken by McGonagall to Dumbledore's office by entering through a stone gargoyle with the password "lemon drop" and up a spiral staircase.

Harry is left in Dumbledore's office. He's alone. He sees the Sorting Hat and tries it on to get some answers about it's decision to put him in Gryffindor House. It reads Harry's thoughts about him wondering and says the dicision was hard, Harry would have done well in Slytherin. Harry sees that he's not alone, there's a bird on a golden perch which suddenly bursts into flames. Dumbledore, who comes in, explains it's a Phoenix. Its name is Fawkes. Bursting into flames means it's their time to die and be reborn from the ashes. He also says it's a shame Harry is seeing it on a Burning Day, normally it's a beautiful creature.

Hagrid bursts in, trying to explain that it couldn't have been Harry who did the harm to Justin and Nearly Headless Nick, since he saw him a few moments before. Dumbledore never thought it was Harry and Harry is allowed to leave.

Term has ended. Most students have gone home for holiday, so now they can play Exploding Snap without bothering anyone. On Christmas morning Hermione comes into Ron and Harry's dormitory, telling them the Polyjuice Potion is ready and bringing them presents. Hedwig flies in, bringing a 'present' (a tooth pick) from the Dursleys. From Hagrid Harry got Treacle Fudge, from Ron a book called Flying with the Cannons, from Hermione a quill and from Mrs. Weasley a hand-knitted sweater and a plum cake.

Christmas dinner is in the Great Hall. It looks magnificent, decorated with Christmas trees, holly and mistletoe. Enchanted snow is falling, warm and dry, from the ceiling. Hagrid is drinking goblets of eggnog. To get bit's of the people to change into for the Polyjuice Potion, Hermione made some plump chocolate cakes, filled with Sleeping Draught. They know that Crabbe and Goyle will take them and then they will be able to get a hair from both of them. Hermione already got hers from Millicent Bullstrode while wrestling during the Dueling Club.

Getting the hairs goes as planned. Ron and Harry also take their shoes and then they go to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. Hermione finishes the Polyjuice Potion and they take it. Ron changes into Crabbe and Harry into Goyle. Hermione refuses to come out of the bathroom stall and Ron and Harry go alone, only having one hour before the Potion's effect will wear off.

Searching for a Slytherin student to get them into their House, they are found by Draco Malfoy. He takes them to the Slytherin's common room, passing through a concealed stone door with the password "Pure-blood". Malfoy shows them an article from the Daily Prophet. It's about Ron's father Arthur Weasley who has been fined for bewitching a Muggle car. Draco's father Lucius Malfoy, who is a governor of Hogwarts, has called for his resignation from the Ministry of Magic, quoting "unable to draw up laws and his Muggle Protection Act should be scrapped immediately". Draco mentions he wishes he knew who the Heir of Slytherin is, which means it's not him. Harry asks if they caught the person who opened the Chamber of Secrets the last time. Draco tells him he presumes they did and that that person is probably still in Azkaban, the wizard prison. Ron starts changing back to his normal form and he and Harry quickly depart for Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. Getting back they find out that the hair from Millicent Bullstrode was in fact a cat hair, giving Hermione the appearance of a cat. They take her to the Hospital wing.

Hermione had to stay in the hospital wing for several weeks. Harry and Ron visited her daily. She got a card from Professor Lockhart. While he and Ron are leaving, Harry pokes fun of Lockhart. Ron is wishing he had asked Hermione how many rat tails one is supposed to add to a Hair Raising Potion when they hear Filch screaming from the floor above.

They run in the direction of the screams and they see a great flood of water stretched over half the corridor, coming from Moaning Myrtle's bathroom. They go into the bathroom and find out someone threw a book at her. They search for it and find it. Ron warns Harry it could be dangerous. He heard from his father about Sonnet of a Sorcerer which made people speak in limericks for the rest of their lives. It turns out to be the diary of T.M.Riddle. Ron remembers this name. Riddle got a Special Award for Services to the School, which Ron remembers because he had to polish it in detention in the beginning of the year. The diary is completely blank. It only shows the store which sold it; Vauxhall Road, London.

Hermione is excused from the hospital wing. Harry tells her about the diary they found that had belonged to T.M. Riddle. Considering Riddle got a special award, and the Chamber was opened fifty years ago; the diary is fifty years old. Hermione thinks Riddle might have caught the Heir of Slytherin. The only problem is that the diary has nothing written in it. Wondering if it might be invisible ink, she tries to spell it to show by an ¤ Aparecium. She also tries a Revealer to reveal the text but it doesn't show anything.

Harry, convinced he somehow heard the name Riddle before, starts looking but only finds his name on an old Medal for Magical Merits on an old list of Head Boys.

There's no more attacks for some time. To boost up morale, Lockhart has arranged a feast for Valentine's Day. The Great Hall decorated and he arranged dwarfs. Proudly he tells them the dwarfs will deliver Valentine's Day Cards and he suggests that students ask Professor Snape to show them how to make a Love Potion or ask Professor Flitwick about Entrancing Enchantments. Late in the afternoon, a dwarf delivers a card to Harry. Harry embarrassingly tries to get away but the dwarf trips him and reads him the card. Draco Malfoy makes fun of him and picks up Riddle's Diary which Harry lost when the dwarf tripped him. Harry shoots the diary out of his hand with an ¤ Expelliarmus and Ron catches it. Malfoy teases Ginny Weasly who has been watching, saying that Harry did not like her card much, implying it was her card. All Harry's books were covered with ink from the fall, except the diary.

At night he writes in the diary and it's 'owner', Tom Riddle, starts writing back. Riddle tells Harry about what happened in his days at Hogwarts and about the Chamber of Secrets. He caught the person who had opened it and that person was expelled by the Headmaster at the time, Professor Dippet. He received a special award but was told never to talk about it. Harry asks who it was who opened the Secret Chamber and Riddle offers to 'show' Harry. Harry accepts and he is "pulled into the story" of what happened at that time. He is in Dumbledore's office but it's the office of Dippet. Harry is present as a spectator of the conversation between Dippet and Riddle. Riddle wants to stay over at Hogwarts for the holiday instead of back to the Muggle orphanage he is raised in. He is told he will not be allowed unless the attacks that have been taking place stop. Riddle leaves and encounters a fifty-year-younger Dumbledore in the corridors. Riddle goes down to the dungeon. There Riddle sees Rubeus Hagrid. He has kept a giant monster-spider as a pet hidden there. Riddle tries to kill it but Rubeus prevents him. Harry is 'dragged' out of the story. Ron comes in the room at that moment and Harry tells him that it was Hagrid who opened the Chamber of Secrets.

Hagrid has always been fond off monsters as pets, but they are not one hundred percent sure it was him. As long as there are no more attacks they decide not to confront him. Everything had calmed down. Peeves stopped making fun of him; Ernie Macmillan asked him politely to pass a bucket of leaping toadstools in Herbology and the Mandrakes were growing fine.

All second years had to think about now was the subjects they wanted to take next year. Neville got lots of letters from wizards and witches in his family. Confused, he keeps asking people if Arithmancy sounds more difficult then Ancient Runes. Harry gets advice from Percy. He recommends Divination and Muggle Studies. Harry ends up choosing the same subjects as Ron.

One day, Harry's dormitory has been searched, the content of his trunk thrown everywhere. Riddle's Diary is missing. He goes down to the common room to tell Hermione, who is reading a book called Ancient Runes Made Easy.

The next day Harry hears 'the voice' agian, saying "Kill this time... let me rip... tear... ". Hermione suddenly says she thinks she understands something and speeds off to the library. Harry goes to the Quidditch pitch for the match against Hufflepuff. Before the match can begin, Professor McGonagall sprints onto the pitch with a megaphone, announcing the match to be canceled. All students have to go back to their House common room. Harry and Ron are taken by Professor McGonagall and shown two more victims of the latest attack, a Ravenclaw girl and Hermione. Both were found in the library. Hermione was holding a small mirror in her hand.

Percy is in shock. The Ravenclaw victim, Penelope Clearwater, is a Prefect, like him.

Ron and Harry decide to go to Hagrid to get information. They use Harry's Invisibility Cloak to get out of the school at night unseen and go to Hagrid's cabin. There's a knock on the door, Harry and Ron hide under the cloak and Hagrid opens the door. It's Dumbledore, followed by Ron's fathers' boss, Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Fudge is under pressure from the Ministry because of all the attacks, and has to take action. As a precaution, he sends Hagrid to Azkaban. There's another knock on the door and Lucius Malfoy enters, bringing an Order of Suspension, signed by all twelve governors to suspend Dumbledore. As all leave, Hagrid says aloud that 'if anyone wants to find out some stuff, all they would have to do is follow the spiders'.

They take Hagrid's boarhound Fang with them. Using the spell ¤ Lumos to make some light with his wand, they enter the forest following the spiders. They run into Ron's fathers' Flying car which has turned wild from living in the forest. They are captured by huge spiders and taken to a vast hollow in the forest, crowded with spiders. They are addressed to by a huge spider, the size of a small elephant, called Aragog. Harry tells him that Hagrid is sent to Azkaban and that he is suspected of opening the Chamber of Secrets and setting a monster free. Aragog tells that it was years ago and that they believed that he was the monster, but in fact he is not. Hagrid received Aragog when it still was an egg, from a stranger, and he took care of him. Aragog was blamed for the death of a girl but Hagrid protected him. He even found a wife, Mosag, for Aragog. Aragog knows the real identity of the monster but does not want to tell it. At the end of the conversation Aragog tells them that they will serve as food for the other spiders but they are saved by the Flying car.

They are left at the edge of the forest and they get the invisibility cloak back from Hagrid's cabin and get back to the Gryffindor common room.

Exams are still on, even with the attacks going on. Professor McGonagall announces in the Great Hall that the Mandrakes are ready for cutting and that the people who have been Petrified will be revived at night.

Ginny Weasley joins them at the table, looking nervous and wanting to tell Ron and Harry something but she decides not to when Percy joins the table.

Ron and Harry try to sneak out to visit Moaning Myrtle to ask her some questions but are stopped by Professor McGonagall. They lie that they were about to visit Hermione and they are allowed to do so. Having to go there now, they discover a paper clutched in her hand. It's a page from an old library book. It's about the Basilisk, also known as the King of Serpents. This Snake has a murderous stare; all who are directly fixed with the beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. It is the mortal enemy of spiders. The note goes on to say that the Basilisk only flees from the crowing of the rooster, which is fatal to it. Written under the information Hermione wrote "pipes". Now Harry understands that the monster from the Chamber of Secrets is a Basilisk and because he can understand Parseltongue, he is the only one who can hear it moving through the plumbing pipes. Nobody died yet because nobody had looked directly into it's stare. The entrance to the Chamber of secrets is probably in Moaning Myrtle's bathroom.

They decide they should tell everything to the teachers, and head toward the staff room. Just then, there is an announcement telling all student to return to their House dormitories and teachers to return to the staff room. Harry and Ron stay hidden in a wardrobe and overhear there has been another attack, and that the victim is Ginny Weasley who has been taken right into the chamber itself. The Heir of Slytherin left another message, "Her skeleton will lie in the Chamber forever". Lockhart joins the teachers, arriving late. All teacher angrily tell Lockhart, who has been bragging all year long about himself, that now it's time for him to be the hero; that he should go and rescue Ginny.

Unable to wait any longer, Harry and Ron go to Lockhart to tell him what they know about the Chamber. Lockhart is packing his stuff, getting ready to leave Hogwarts as soon as possible. He is a coward, confessing that the stories in his books mostly didn't happen to him. He 'stole' other peoples stories and put a Memory Charm on them so they wouldn't remember. Lockhart is on the point of putting a Memory Charm on Ron and Harry when Harry disarms him with an ¤ Expelliarmus. They take Lockhart to Moaning Myrtle's bathroom and ask her how she died. Myrtle tells them she was hiding because Olive Hornby was teasing her. She heard a different language, a boy talking, she opened the door and died and that the last thing she remembered seeing was a pair of great big yellow eyes.

They find the entrance and Harry opens it, speaking in Parseltongue. The three of them enter and go down, falling miles under the school; probably under the lake. It's completely dark and Harry lights the place with a ¤ Lumos. They find a snake skin. Lockhart manages to get Ron's Spellotape wand and tries to perform a Memory Charm ¤ Obliviate. Ron's wand explodes. The tunnel is blocked, Harry continues alone and finds the Chamber.

Harry enters the Chamber of Secrets and finds Ginny, barely alive. He is awaited in the Chamber by Tom Riddle, not as a ghost but as a memory, preserved in his Diary. The diary is lying on the floor near a giant statue. Riddle has Harry's wand. He tells Harry Ginny has been writing in his diary for months and Riddle enchanted her to open the Chamber of Secrets and 'set the Serpent of Slytherin on four Mudbloods'. She finally became suspicous and tried to get rid of the diary, which Harry later found.

Riddle tells the real story of fifty years ago, how he framed Hagrid and how Professor Dumbledore, then Transfiguration teacher, suspected him. For months his new target has been Harry. He uses Harry's wand and writes the words "TOM MARVOLO RIDDLE" in the air, then waving his wand the letters rearrange themselves to "I AM LORD VOLDERMORT". Riddle is the Heir of Slytherin, he is Voldemort. Riddle claims to be the greatest sorcerer in the world, Harry contradicts him saying that Dumbledore is. Along with music, Fawkes the Phoenix flies in, bringing Harry the Sorting Hat.

Riddle summons the Basilisk and it enters through the statue of Salazar Slytherin. Fawkes tries to protect Harry, attacking the Serpent and blinding it. The snake's whipping tail sweeps the Sorting Hat into Harry's arms, he puts it on. A sword falls out of it. As the Basilisk lunges at him, Harry drives the sword to the hilt into the roof of the serpent's mouth, one poisonous fang sinking into his arm in the act.

Fawkes cries tears onto Harry's wound. Riddle realises it and as he is about to finish Harry of with his wand, Harry takes the basilisk fang and plunges it into the diary, thereby killing Riddle.

Ginny wakes up. They return to Ron and Lockhart. Lockhart's Memory Charm turns out to have backfired and has wiped out his memory. Fawkes takes them all back up to the castle and up to Professor McGonagall's office.

In Professor McGonagall's office, Mrs. Weasley and Mr. Weasley have already been waiting after having been notified what had happend to Ginny. Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore are in the room too. Harry explains everything what had happened, avoiding mentioning Riddle's diary or Ginny. When asked how he got out of there alive, Dumbledore intervenes by wondering loudly how Voldemort managed to enchant Ginny, while he is supposed to be hiding in Albania. Harry explains it was his old diary.

All Petrified people are better. Ron and Harry will both receive a Special Award for Services to the School. They explain what happened to Lockhart.

Harry has a private conversation with Dumbledore. He hears that speaking Parseltongue is a power transferred from Lord Voldemort, the last remaining ancestor of Salazar Slytherin, to him on the night he got his Scar. Harry, thinking that because of this he should be in Slytherin, is told that the sword which fell out of the Sorting Hat is the Sword of Godric Gryffindor and only a real Gryffindor could have summoned it out of the hat.

Lucius Malfoy enters, followed by Dobby. He is told that they found the culprit. Although he can not prove it, Harry acuses him of putting the Diary into Ginny's bag in Flourish and Blotts. Malfoy leaves angrily. By tricking Malfoy into it, Harry has Malfoy unknowingly set Dobby free.

Harry is hero again. Ron joins the fame. Both had won two hundred points each, securing Gryffindor winning the House cup for the second year running.

Year's finished and all head home on the Hogwarts Express. Ginny tells them what she wanted to tell them earlier. Percy has a girlfriend, Penelope Clearwater from Ravenclaw. She walked in on them, kissing. Harry returns to the Dursleys.

Harry is back at the Dursleys', reading A History of Magic. He has to write an essay on Witch-Burning in the Fourteenth Century. He reads about the pointlessness of it. Muggles were not very good at recognising it. On rare occasions when they did catch a real witch or wizard, the witch or wizard would perform a basic Flame-Freezing Charm and pretend to be in pain. Wendelin the Weird was famous for having himself caught and enjoying the frozen flames.

The Dursleys locked up Harry's spellbooks, wand, cauldron and broomstick. Harry managed to 'steal' a spellbook back, since he needs it to write an essay about Shrinking Potions.

On his birthday three owls fly in; Errol, Hedwig and another, unknown to Harry, wearing the Hogwarts crest. The first letter is from Ron. It has a cutting from the Daily Prophet saying that Mr. Weasley won the annual Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw. Mr. Weasley stated that they will be spending the gold on a summer holiday in Egypt where Bill works as a Curse Breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank. It also has a letter from Ron, asking to meet in London next week and mentioning that Percy has become Head Boy. In the letter he also finds a Pocket Sneakoscope which looks like a miniature glass spinning top, with a note explaining that it is used to notify the owner when there is someone untrustworthy around. Hedwig brought a letter from Hermione. Hermione also included a Broomstick Servicing Kit as a present, containing a jar of Fleetwood's High-Finish Handle Polish, a pair of Tail-Twig Clippers, a compass to clip onto your broom and a Handbook of Do-it-Yourself Broomcare. The last parcel was from Hagrid, containing a book called The Monster Book of Monsters with a note. The last letter was from Professor McGonagall. It is said that the new school year will begin on September the first and third-years are permitted to visit the village of Hogsmeade at certain weekends if they bring a filled-in permission form from a parent or guardian.

At breakfast next morning, Dudley, Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia are already sitting at the kitchen table. They're watching Dudley's new tv, a present from his parents. Harry hears a news report about an escaped convict, Sirius Black, who is armed and extremely dangerous.

Aunt Marge, Uncle Vernon's sister, will come to visit today. She does not like Harry. Once, when Harry had trodden on the paw of her dog, Ripper, and it had chased Harry into a tree, she had refused to call the dog off until past midnight. Uncle Vernon warns Harry to be polite, to 'not do any funny stuff' and to stick to the story that Harry attends St. Brutus's Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys.

Harry tries to get the signed permission to visit Hogsmeade from Uncle Vernon by saying "the signed permission will make him remember better the things to say and do while Aunt Marge is there". Uncle Vernon will see if all goes right and then take a look at the form.

Aunt Marge arrives. Harry takes her suitcase upstairs and goes back to the kitchen. Aunt Marge is telling her brother that her dogs are taken care by Colonel Fubster. She starts humiliating Harry by berating him.

The next day Harry suffers more of Marge's dislike for him, only restraining himself by thinking of the Hogsmeade form and focussing his thoughts on his Handbook of Do-it-Yourself Broomcare. On the final evening of Marge's stay she starts saying cruel things about Harry's parents. Harry, having difficulty restraining himself, tries to force himself to remember page twelve of his book A Charm to Cure Reluctant Reversers. Aunt Marge's insults get worse and Harry snaps. He causes his Aunt Marge to start swelling like a balloon, drifting up in the air. In panic, Harry takes his trunk from the cupboard, takes his stuff from his room and flees from the house

Harry wanders several streets after having fled from the house until reaching Magnolia Crescent. Realising he had just broken the Decree for the Restriction of Underage Wizardry he is sure he will be expelled. Trying to decide what to do he feels himself being watched. With a Lumos spell he makes light, and sees something ( * find out more ) very big with wide gleaming eyes. Stepping backwards, he trips over his trunk and at that moment The Knight Bus, a transport for wizards, arrives.

The conductor is Stan Shunpike. To not make the Ministery of Magic easy to track him, Harry pretends his name is Neville Longbottom. He figures out the bus picks up stranded wizards. The driver of the bus is Ernie Prang. Harry pays to be taken to London. Along the way one of the other passengers, Madam Marsh gets out.

Stan is reading a copy of the Daily Prophet showing a photograph of Sirius Black, the fugitive he saw on the news report at the Dursleys'. The news article which accompanies the photograph states that the Ministry of Magic has confirmed that Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison. Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic states they're doing everything they can to capture him. Fudge has been criticised by some members of the International Federation of Warlocks for informing the Muggle Prime Minister of the Crisis. Fudge explained the Muggles had to know since Black is a danger to both the wizard and muggle world, reminding them of the massacre of twelve years ago when he killed thirteen people with a single curse. Stan relates that Black was a supporter of You-Know-Who (Voldemort).

One by one the passengers leave the bus. Harry is taken to Diagon Alley, in front of the Leaky Cauldron. Before he even has taken his trunk from the bus, he's welcomed, not apprehended, by Fudge and taken into the Leaky Cauldron. Tom, the owner provides tea and a private parlour for Harry.

Fudge tells Harry two members of the Accidental Magic Reversal Department dealt with the blowing-up of his Aunt Marge. Her memory has been modified; no harm was done. Harry won't receive punishment, which doesn't make sense since last year he got an official warning when a house-elf smashed a pudding in his uncle's house. Harry asks why but Fudge refuses to explain. Harry leaves it at that, happy for not being punished but suspicious of the reason.

Being led to his room, he finds Hedwig who has come back after having been sent away from the Dursley's house

For the remaining days until school starts, Harry stays at the Leaky Cauldron. During breakfast each morning there he watches other witches and wizards arguing over articles in Transfiguration Today, Warlocks and Dwarfs. He spends long days exploring Diagon Alley, and outside Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour, watching people showing each other their purchases (among them, someone showing a lunascope) and finishing his essays, sometimes getting help from Florean Fortescue himself.

Harry has refilled his money bag with gold Galleons, silver Sickles and bronze Knuts from his vault at Gringotts and it requires a lot of self-control not to spend everything at once. He sees a set of Gobstones, a wizarding game, and a moving model of the galaxy in a glass ball, but doesn't buy them. Most tempting is the new broom, the Firebolt, which he sees in Quality Quidditch Supplies.

The only things Harry ends up buying are new school supplies. He needs potion ingredients, new robes, and new school books, including the ones for the two new subjects Care of Magical Creatures and Divination.

He goes to Flourish and Blotts to buy his new books. In the store all the copies of The Monster Book of Monsters are kept in a cage since they act like small monsters themselves, snapping at each other and tearing pages. The store manager complains it's the worst case since the bought two hundendred copies of The Invisible Book of Invisibility which "cost a fortune and I never found them!" On his book list there is Unfogging the Future by Cassandra Vablatsky, and the store magager leads Harry into the back of the shop where, on a small table, there are books about fortune-telling like Predicting the Unpredictable: Insulate yourself against Shocks and Broken Balls: When Fortunes Turn Foul.

While the manager is showing Harry a copy of Unfogging the Future and talking about it, Harry's eyes had fallen on a book called Death Omens: What To Do When You Know The Worst Is Coming, on which he sees a big black dog on the cover which looked oddly familiar.

Harry also buys Intermediate Transfiguration and The Standard Book of Spells, Grade Three and then returns to the Leaky Cauldron.

On the last day of holidays he meets with Ron and Hermione. Ron got a new wand, fourteen inches, willow and containing one Unicorn tail-hair. Hermione has three bags of books; she will have more subjects then Ron and Harry. Among them are Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Divination, Ancient Runes and Muggle Studies.

Hermione wants to buy an owl with her remaining ten galleons. They go to the magical-creature shop Magical Menagerie. Ron has his rat Scabbers examined there. Scabbers is already old, has a tattered left ear and a missing toe from his front paw. Suddenly a huge orange cat called Crookshanks attacks Scabbers and it takes them nearly ten minutes to find Scabbers after he had had taken refuge under a wastepaper bin. Hermione ends up buying the cat.

The three find Mr. Weasley sitting in the Leaky Cauldron, reading the Daily Prophet. Mrs. Weasley, Fred, George, Ginny and Percy arrive some minutes later. Next day they will be brought to King's Cross by ministry cars. On the last evening, Harry overhears a conversation between Mr. and Mrs. Weasley about him. They are talking about the fact that Sirius Black is presumed to be after Harry and whether or not Harry should know about this. Harry would be safe at Hogwarts while Dumbledore is there. And although Dumbledore isn't fond of them, he will allow the Azkaban guards to be stationed around the entrances of the school grounds

It is their last breakfast at the Leaky Cauldron. Mr. Weasley is reading the Daily Prophet while Mrs. Weasley is telling Ginny and Hermione about a Love Potion she'd made as a young girl. The ministery cars arrive and they depart for King's Cross to get on the Hogwarts Express at Platform nine and three-quarters.

Before leaving, Mr. Weasley wants to tell Harry something, but Harry interrupts, telling him that he already knows about Black. Mr. Weasley wants Harry to promise he won't go looking for Black. Then Harry joined Ron and Hermione on the train.

In their compartment, there's only one person, Professor R. J. Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry tells Ron and Hermione about Black being after him.

Harry's Sneakoscope starts whistling, appearantly without reason. Ron suggests to have it fixed at Hogsmeade in Dervish and Banges. Hermione asks ron about Hogsmeade. Ron tells her he wants to go there to go to Honeydukes, a sweetshop. They've got everything there, he tells her; Pepper Imps which make you smoke at the mouth, Chocoballs and sugar quills. Hermione just knows facts from books; in Sites of Historical Sorcery it says the inn was the headquarters for the 1612 Goblin rebellion, and the Shrieking Shack is supposed to be haunted. Harry won't be able to go since he has no written permission.

Crookshanks tries to attack Scabbers again.

Draco, Crabbe and Goyle pass through their compartment.

They are nearly at Hogwarts when the train stops and the lights go out. Professor Lupin wakes up. He has conjured up a handful of flames for illumination. When he gets up to check out what's happened, a cloaked figure enters the compartment. An intense cold sweeps over Harry, he drowns in coldness, he hears screaming, and passes out. When he comes to, he is lying on the floor. No one else heard the screams he heard. Lupin explains it was the effect of the cloaked figured which entered; a Dementor, a guard from Azkaban.

The train continues and they arrive at Hogwarts, being welcomed by Hagrid. There are more Dementors guarding the entrances. Hermione, Ron and Harry are called by Professor McGonagall to follow her to her office. Professor McGonagall heard from Lupin that Harry was taken ill on the train and called Madam Pomfrey to take a look at Harry. Then Harry and Ron are excused while Professor McGonagall has a word with Hermione about her timetable.

Ariving in the Great Hall they find that the Sorting Ceremony is already over. Dumbledore adresses the students about the Dementors, telling that nobody is to leave school without permission. He also announces Lupin as the new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher and the retirement of the Care of Magical Creatures teacher Professor Kettleburn. Hagrid will be teaching that course.

After dinner they go to Gryffindor tower, entering through the portrait of the Fat Lady with the new password "Fortuna Major"

On the first day of school, Draco is heard mocking Harry's fainting on the train at the Slytherin table. Ron notices the apparent mixup in Hermione's timetable, having three classes at the same time, but Hermione says it's all fixed with Professor McGonagall. Harry, Hermione and Ron set out for their first Divination class at the top of North Tower.

They had never been to the North Tower before and need to ask directions. Sir Cadogan, a personage in one of the paintings on the wall, shows them the way.

The teacher is Professor Sybill Trelawney. She starts telling them about the Inner Eye, the ability to penetrate the mysteries of the future. This term, they will be learning to read tea leaves, next term they will start palmistry. Later on, they will progress to fire-omens and the crystall ball. She scares them with all kind of warnings and events, regarding the future. She tells Lavender Brown that the thing she is dreading will happen of Friday, the sixteenth of October. They start reading tea leaves and interpret them using their book Unfogging the Future. Professor Trelawney interrupts Ron and Harry, predicting terrible things to Harry from his tea cup. She says Harry has the Grim, the giant, spectral dog that haunts churchyards; an omen of death. Harry remembers the dog on the cover of Death Omens in Flourish and Blotts and the dog in Magnolia Crescent. The whole class is upset by the prediction of Harry's death.

Next lesson is Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall. She is telling them about Animagi, wizards who can transform at will into animals, and she transforms into a tabby cat to show them, but stops abrubtly, asking what is wrong with them, showing no attention at all. Hermione tells what happened at divination. Professor McGonagall tells them that Professor Trelawney predicts the death of a student every year, but none of them has died yet. She also questions her ability, saying that true Seers are very rare.... Most students feel a bit relieved by her words.

Ron is still upset. After asking Harry if he did see a great black dog, Harry confirming, he tells them that his uncle Bilius once saw one and died twenty-four hours later.

In the afternoon they have their first Care of Magical Creatures class, taught by Hagrid. Hagrid tells them to open their books, but everybody seems to have sealed their copy of The Monster Book of Monsters with ropes. Hagrid showed them they could open them by stroking them. Next he show them Hippogriffs, creatures with the body, hind legs and tail of a horse, but with the front legs, wings and head of a giant eagle. The way to deal with them is to never insult them; bow to them and if they bow back you are allowed to touch them. Harry volunteers to try first with a Hippogriff called Buckbeak. He bows, it bows back and Hagrid has Harry ride it. After flying around the paddock once they head back to the ground. Next the rest of the class does the same.

Malfoy insults Buckbeak and is attacked by it. He has to go to the Hospital wing to have his arm taken care of.

At night, Harry, Ron and Hermione go and see Hagrid again. Hagrid reckons he will be fired soon. The school governors have been told and they reckon he should have started smaller, with Flobberworms or something similar. Next he takes them back to the castle, telling them off for wandering around after dark

Draco pretends he cannot use his arm to cut his ingredients and Ron is ordered by Snape to do it for him. Harry is then ordered to skin Draco's Shrivelfig.

Neville's potion has gone wrong, turning orange instead of green.

Seamus Finnigan tells Harry that Black has been spotted not far from Hogwarts, according to the Daily Prophet. Draco, overhearing their conversation, starts criticising Harry, saying that if he were in his place, he would go after Black himself. Harry doesn't understand what he is insinuating.

Snape tests Neville's potion on his toad Trevor. Neville's shrinking potion worked, as he had help from Hermione fixing it.

After classes Harry and Ron notice that one moment Hermione's right behind them, some seconds later she is way behind them.

Next they have Defense Against the Dark Arts with Professor Lupin. He takes them along the corridors. In one of the corridors, Peeves is putting gum in Mr. Filch's broomcloset. After warning Peeves to take it out, Peeves refuses. Lupin charms the gum out into Peeves' nose with a ¤ Waddiwasi charm.

He leads them to the staff-room. Inside the wardrobe there's a Boggart. Boggarts are creatures who like dark, enclosed spaces. They're shape-shifters who can take the shape of whatever they think will frighten people most. The charm that repels a Boggart is laughter, accompanied by ¤ Riddikulus. Neville is the first one to confront the Boggart, which turns itself into Professor Snape at seeing Neville. Neville charms it into his grandmother's clothes. The Boggart continues to the next person, and so on. The Boggart turns into a mummy at confronting Parvati Patil, into a Banshee confronting Seamus Finnigan, into a rat, into a rattlesnake, into a bloody eyeball, into a severed hand confronting Dean Thomas and into a Spider confronting Ron. As it is about to confront Harry, Lupin hurries forward and it turns into a silvery white orb. It turns into Snape again and Neville finishes the Boggart off.

In no time at all, Defense Against the Dark Arts becomes everyone's favourite class. After Boggarts, they studied Red Caps, little Goblin-like creatures and Kappas, water-dwellers that look like scaly monkeys.

Professor Snape is giving them a hard time. Harry is not fond of Professor Trelawney's classes, Parvati Patil and Lavender Brown loved her classes more then anyone. In Hagrid's classes they now were only spending their lessons looking after Flobberworms.

There's one thing to look forward to, Quidditch is about to start again. Oliver Wood is telling the team it will be his last year, his last chance to win the Quidditch Cup.

After returning from Quidditch practice one day, Harry hears that first Hogsmeade weekend will be at Halloween. Fred is happy; he needs to visit Zonko's cause he's nearly out of Stink Pellets. Harry will not be allowed to go, since he has no written permission.

Crookshanks attacks Scabbers again, who hides beneath an old chest of drawers.

After the next Transfiguration lesson, Harry plans to ask Professor McGonagall if he can go to Hogsmeade anyway. Before class starts, Lavender Brown is crying outside the classroom. Her rabbit was killed by a fox and today is the sixteenth of October. She thinks this was what Professor Trelawney predicted. After Transfiguration class, Professor asks the students to hand in their written permission. Neville forgot his, but appearantly his grandmother sent it directly to Professor McGonagall. Harry asks her if he can go anyway without the written permission but the answer is no.

On Halloween, after seeing the the other student off, Harry is asked by Colin Creevy why he's not going. Harry tells him he needs to do some work in the library. Having told Colin this, he has no choice but to head back toward the common room. He runs into Filch who asks him why he's not with the rest at Hogsmeade buying Stink Pellets, Belch Powder and Whizzing Worms. He sends him back to the common room. Harry wanders around a bit.

He is suddenly called by Professor Lupin. Lupin shows Harry the Grindylow, a water demon, which has just arrived and will be used for next lessons. They start talking and Harry asks him why he didn't let him confront the Boggart. Lupin explains he was afraid it would turn into Voldemort and that would scare the other students. Harry says it probably would have turned into a Dementor. Professor Snape comes in bringing a potion for Lupin.

The rest of the class returns from Hogsmeade. Ron brings a lot of sweets for Harry and tells him they went to Dervish and Banges, Zonko's, to the Three Broomsticks to drink Butterbeer and to many other places and that he thinks they saw an Ogre at the Three Broomsticks.

At night there's the Halloween dinner. After dinner they return back to the Gryffindor common room but cannot enter, as the Fat Lady has fled from her painting, which was slashed by someone. Professor Dumbledore is fetched. It is raining very hard. Wood calls a timeout. Harry complains he can't see a thing through his glasses with this rain, and Hermione charms it with a ¤ Impervius, making it repel water. The game continues. Suddenly he sees the Black Dog again. Wood spots Cedric going for the Snitch and Harry goes after it also. While he is chasing the snitch, an eerie silence is falling across the stadium. An then a horribly familiar wave of cold sweeps over him. He looks down and sees at least a hundred Dementors below him. He hears a conversation and screaming inside his head ... a woman pleading with a man not to kill Harry but her instead. Harry hears a shrill voice laughing, the woman screaming, and then he faints.

Harry regains consiousness in the Hospital wing. Fred and George tell him what happened. Diggory got the snitch just after Harry fell; he didn't realise what had happened. He even tried to call off the game, but they won fairly. Ron and Hermione tell him that when he fell, Dumbledore waved his wand to slow down his fall before he hit the ground and charmed the Dementors away. His Nimbus Two Thousand was blown away when he fell. After it hit the Whomping Willow, the Willow completely destroyed it

Harry has to stay in the hospital wing the rest of the weekend. He is worried about having seen the Grim two times now. He also realises what the screaming voices inside his head were; the last moments of his mother's life beforeLord Voldemort killed her.

In the next Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson, Professor Lupin teaches them about Hinkypunks, one-legged creatures who look like they are made of wisps of smoke. After classes, Lupin wants a word with Harry. He feels sorry for Harry having lost his broomstick. They planted the Whomping Willow the same year that Lupin came to Hogwarts. They used to play games trying to get close to the trunk untill a boy called Davey Gudgeon almost lost an eye. Lupin explains the Dementors affect Harry more then other people because he has horrors in his past that others do not. Dementors feed on people's peace, hope and happiness, draining it out of them, untill their victim is reduced to something souless and evil. Harry asks Lupin to teach him how to fight the Dementors.

Christmas is near, Professor Flitwick decorated his classroom with shimmering fairies. Ron and Hermione stay at Hogwarts during holiday. There will be one more Hogsmeade trip on the last weekend of term. Hermione is anxious to buy Toothflossing Stringmints for her parents at Honeydukes.

Harry is not allowed to go and borrows a copy of Which Broomstick from Wood to pass some time reading. Since he had lost his broom, he had tried a Shooting Star, one of the school brooms. He definitely needed a new broom of his own.

At the day of the Hogsmeade trip, Harry says goodbye to Ron and Hermione and starts to head back to Gryffindor tower when he is stopped by Fred and George. They give him an 'early christmas present'. It looks like an old parchment. They explain that in their first year, after letting off a Dungbomb in the corridor, Filch caught them and took them to his office. After creating some diversion with another Dungbomb, they stole it from one of Filch's filing cabinets drawers marked 'Confiscated and Highly Dangerous'. They show Harry how it works. Lines and words begin to appear. On the parchment there's written "Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Purveyors of Aids to Magical Mischief-Makers are proud to present "The Marauder's Map". The map shows every detail of Hogwarts, including people in the castle and secret passages, some leading right into Hogsmeade. From the seven passages, Filch knows four. One is caved in. One has the Whomping Willow right over it's entrance and one of them leads right into the cellar of Honeydukes.

Harry decides to use the map to go to Hogsmeade. He enters the last passage through a statue of the one-eyed witch with a ¤ Dissendium. It is dark and he illuminates it with a ¤ Lumos. After a long time he reaches the end of the passage. Through a trapdoor he enters the cellar of Honeydukes. Somebody is coming down, being told to get another box of Jelly Slugs. Quickly Harry gets up the stairs into Honeydukes.

The store is loaded with sweets; nougat, coconut ice, toffees, chocolates, Every Flavor Beans, Fizzing Whizzbees, Drooble's Best Blowing Gum, Toothflossing Stringmints, Pepper Imps, Ice Mice, peppermint creames, sugar-spun quills and exploding bonbons. Harry goes to Hermione and Ron who are looking between sweets like lollipops and Cockroach Clusters to buy something for Harry. He tells them all about the Marauder's Map. They discuss wether Harry should or should not be coming to Hogsmeade with Black being loose.

Ron tells them about the time, when he was seven, Fred had given him an Acid Pop which burnt a hole through his tongue. They buy their sweets and leave, going to the Three Broomsticks next to have some Butterbeer.

In the Three Broomsticks Madam Rosmerta is serving people. They go to sit in the back of the room and drink Butterbeer. Professor McGonagall, Professor Flitwick, Hagrid and Cornelius Fudge enter and walk towards them. Because they shouldn't find out Harry is there, Hermione charms a christmas tree with a ¤ Mobiliarbus to move in front of them, blocking the view. The go and sit at the table next to theirs. Madam Rosmerta brings their drinks, a Gillywater for McGonagall, four mulled mead for Hagrid, a cherry syrup and soda with ice for Flitwick and a red currant rum for Fudge. They start talking about Black. Rosmerta tells them the Dementors searched her pub twice looking for Black.

Harry hears McGonagall tell the others that Black and his father, James Potter, used to be inseparable, best friends. Sirius Black was best man when Harry's parents, James and Lily, married. They even named him godfather to Harry. When You-Know-Who was after the Potters, Dumbledore told them to go into hiding. The Potters then used an immensly complex spell, the Fidelius Charm. Using this charm, the secret information of the whereabouts of the Potters would be hidden insde a person, the Secret-Keeper, and as long as the Secret-Keeper refuses to speak, Voldemort would never find the Potters. Black was chosen as Secret-Keeper. Dumbledore, who was suspecting there was a traitor amongst them, even offered to be Secret-Keeper himself. But James Potter insisted on using Black. A week after the Fidelius Charm had been performed, his parents were betrayed. They were then found and killed by Voldemort.

Hagrid remembers taking Harry from the ruins of the house, just after Harry's parents were killed. Sirius Black turned up a bit later on his flying motorbike. Hagrid hadn't known Black was the traitor. Fortunately he had orders from Dumbledore to bring Harry to the Dursleys when Black offered to look after Harry. The day after his parents death, Black killed Pettigrew, who was their friend and wanted revenge for killing James Potter. They all felt sorry for Pettigrew. Fudge says that only a trained Hit Wizard from the Magical Law Enforcement Squad would have stood a chance against Black. He was Junior Minister at that time in the Department of Magical Catastrophes and one of the first ones on the scene after Black murdered all these people in his fight with Pettigrew. Black was arrested and sent to Azkaban; Pettigrew received the Order of Merlin, First Class. Fudge tells the others that when he met with Black in Azkaban, he seemed very calm.

The teachers leave, Harry is in shock from everything he has found out

Although in shock, somehow Harry had manages to get back through the tunnel to Hogwarts. He goes straight to his room to look for pictures with Black in the photo album he got from Hagrid with pictures of his parents. He feels a undescribable hatred for Black.

Having been unable to get to sleep, next day he finds out it's the first day of holiday. Ron and Hermione warn Harry not to go after Black himself. Harry tells them about how he hears his mother die every time a Dementor is near. But Ron and Hermione insist Black is too dangerous to go after himself. The only thing they found that belonged to Pettigrew was a finger.

They decide to visit Hagrid. Hagrid is in tears. He got a letter saying Buckbeak the Hippogriff will have to be taken to the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. Hagrid says it will be executed by the gargoyles at the Committee if he loses the case. The three offer to help in Buckbeaks defense.

In the library they do some research about accused Hippogriffs. There's some information about a Hippogriff that was convicted and about a Manticore that was let off, but they do not find any substantial help yet.

On Christmas morning Harry receives presents. A jumper, mince pies, christmas cake and nut brittle from Mrs. Weasley. He also gets a present from an anonymous donoe; a brand new broom, a Firebolt. They speculate about who might have given it to Harry. Hermione enters, she's suspicious about the donator of the Firebolt. Crookshanks tries to catch Scabbers again. Harry's Sneakoscope starts whirling.

There's lunch in the Great Hall. All the teachers and the few students sit at the same table. When finishing dinner, Harry and Ron leave while Hermione has a short word with Professor McGonagall.

They go back to their common room through the portrait hole with the password "Scurvy cur". As they are admiring the Firebolt, Professor McGonagall comes in. She confiscates the Firebolt to have it examined for jinxes. Hermione had told McGonagall about the broom because she suspected it was sent by Black

3-12: The Patronus

Harry and Ron are angry at Hermione. Wood seeks Harry to find out if he will be able to play in the next game.

Harry has his first Anti-Dementor lesson from Professor Lupin. Lupin uses a Boggart which will turn into a Dementor. He teaches Harry the Patronus Charm, ¤ Expecto Patronum. A Patronus is a type of guardian which will act as a shield between him and the Dementor. Harry tries it on the Boggart, shape-shifted as a Dementor. Inside his head, he hears the last moments of his mother's life again. He loses consiousness and regains it again, Lupin giving him Chocolate Frogs. He tries again, this time he hears his father also. Lupin tells Harry he used to be friends with his father. Harry has another go and this time he's able to keep stand up to the Dementor. Lupin charms it with a ¤ Riddikulus and puts the Boggart back into a packing case.

Slytherin had beaten Ravenclaw at Quidditch, meaning Gryffindor still has a good shot at the Cup. Wood increases the team practices. Besides his Anti-Dementor lessons, Harry has little time left for homework. Hermione also seems to be strained by all the classes she's taking. Ron wonders how she has manages to attend all of her classes. He had heard her talking to Arithmancy Professor Vector about yesterday's lesson, but could not understand how she could have been there because she was with them in Care of Magical Creatures class. In addition to that, Ernie McMillan had told him that hermione never missed a Muggle Studies class, although most of these classes are at the same time.

Time passes and Harry still hasn't got his broom back. He is told it has been tested for the usual curses but it still has to be cleared for a Hurling Hex.

Anti-Dementor lessons have not shown much more progress. Lupin tells Harry about the Dementors' Kiss which they use to suck out the soul of a person. He tells Harry that this will be Black's fate when he is caught, as the Dementors have been given permision by the Ministry.

Harry get's his broom back from Professor McGonagall. Together with Ron he sets off to the common room to make up with Hermione. Neville is at the entrance. He lost the passwords after having written them down not to forget them. Harry says the password "Oddsbodikins" and they enter the common room. Everybody has gathered to admire his new broom. After a while, Ron offers to take it upstairs. While Harry is talking with Hermione, there's a yell and Ron comes down. Holding a bloodstained sheet, he tells them Scabbers is gone and he found ginger cat hairs in his room</li
